![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Some people have different ethical standards than others, IMO they just went with drawing the line based on how the majority see those characters, or at least how the majority finds it easy to conceive a non-evil version of them. Perhaps they felt those two archetypes were a bit too evil-tied due to their divine connection, whereas its much easier to justify a good-ish assassin, necromancer, or warlock. Likewise, while paladin's can be "any" alignment, their oaths really kind of limit them to certain behaviors and I can't see any behaviors listed on the blackguard that screams "plays well with others", if any of the multitudes of evil paladin classes are any indication. Its really hard to "fight back" against your patron (like a warlock) and the class is about serving him. ![]() A cleric with the death domain is going to worship a death god (or not remain a cleric too long) and most death gods are unwholesome. That's not really possible with divinely powered PCs. Even warlocks don't have to be evil their patrons aren't always wholesome but they can try to "fight back" against them. You can be more benign necromancer who uses his dark arts to combat undead or an assassin bent of ridding the world of really bad people. If death clerics and blackguards are only the DMG, why? I want to hear what other people are thinking.Īssassins and necromancers, while typically evil aligned, don't need to be. If the above rumours are all true though, then my assumption for why blackguards and death clerics ended up in the DMG is totally wrong. Given that this is mostly speculation based on rumours and obsolete documents, I don't know what to believe. I've also heard we should expect to see drow as a player race in the PH, and based on a similar note beside dwarves in 5Basic, I kind of expect to see duergar too. The warlock class is strongly flavoured towards the character have a personal relationship with evil (or at least certainly non-good) entities. The rumours I've heard say that the assassin subclass for rogues and the necromancer subclass for wizards will be in the Player's Handbook, and both of those certainly lean towards evil (especially if the rumoured flavour of 5E necromancy turns out to be true). Upon reflection, I'm thinking that assumption might be totally wrong. (Source?) I had assumed the idea was that evil-themed character options would be best if printed away from the main options Player's Handbook, to emphasize their optional nature. I've heard rumours that blackguard subclass for paladins and the death domain for clerics will both be stashed in the DMG. ![]()
